About Proxima

Built for the people
right next to you

Proxima is a location-based social app built around where you actually are — your campus, your neighborhood, your favorite spots. Open the map, see what's nearby, and jump into the conversation happening right now.

Post to location feeds, hang out in real-time chatrooms, or broadcast a message to anyone within range. You choose your display name — and you can go fully anonymous whenever you want. No follower counts, no influencer culture, just genuine connection with the people around you.

Proxima started at FSU and is growing from there. Wherever you are, if there are people nearby, there's a conversation waiting.

What Proxima Does

Pseudonymous. Local. Real-Time.

Everything you need to connect with the people and places around you — with the freedom to be as anonymous as you want.

Go Anonymous, Anytime

Sign in with a display ID and flip on Anonymous Mode whenever you want. Post, chat, and comment without your name attached — the choice is always yours.

Map-First Discovery

Open the map and see every active location around you. Tap any spot to browse its feed and chatrooms. Your world, laid out in front of you.

Location Feeds & Posts

Post photos, GIFs, and text to any location you're at. Comment, upvote, downvote — the best content rises naturally. Your feed radius is fully in your control.

Live Chatrooms

Every location has a real-time chatroom powered by WebSockets. Send images and GIFs, reply to specific messages, vote on what you love — all happening live.

Nearby Broadcast

Send a message to anyone within your proximity radius — no group chat setup, no friending required. Just a direct signal to whoever's around you right now.

Built-In Safety

Block users, mute locations you're over, report bad content — and our moderation system handles the rest. You're in control of your experience.

FAQ

Your questions, answered

Everything you need to know about how Proxima works.

Yes — Proxima uses email and password sign-in. Your email is never shown to anyone. Other users see your display ID, or just "Anonymous" when you have Anonymous Mode turned on.

Proxima is pseudonymous by default — you pick a display ID, not your real name. Flip on Anonymous Mode in Settings and your display ID disappears from everything you post or send. You can turn it on and off whenever you want.

Nearby lets you broadcast a message to everyone physically around you within your proximity radius. Think of it like shouting into the crowd at a game — anyone close enough can see it. You can also send images and GIFs.

The map shows every active location near you — your campus buildings, neighborhoods, venues, and more. Tap any pin to see its live feed and jump into its chatroom. Your own location pin is never shown to other users.

Yes. You can attach images and GIFs to posts, comments, chatroom messages, and nearby broadcasts. GIF search is built right into the composer.

Mute it. Hit the three-dot menu on any location and mute it — it disappears from your feed until you unmute it. You can manage all your muted locations in Safety & Privacy settings.

Proxima uses your location to place you in nearby rooms and power the Nearby tab. For Nearby messages, coordinates are stored to support the feature and keep things safe. Your exact GPS pin is never shown publicly to other users.

Content goes through automated moderation, users can report anything that violates the rules, and admins can remove content or suspend accounts. You can also block individual users and mute locations you're done with.

Yes, from Settings you can request full account deletion. Your content is removed from the app and your identifying account data is scrubbed. Check the Privacy Policy for the full details.

Proxima launched with a curated set of locations starting at FSU and Tallahassee. New locations are being added as we grow — if you want your campus or neighborhood added, reach out.
